depreciating-tongue

Greetings to you in the Name of Jesus Christ and welcome the fourth week of our series on The Power of the Tongue. This week, the focus is on the Self-Deprecating TongueAccording to the Concise Edition of Webster’s New World Dictionary, to deprecate means to “express disapproval, to fall in value or to lower in honor or esteem”; therefore having a self-deprecating tongue means to always undervalue oneself with negative confessions.

Christ has redeemed us to sit with Him in High places and to reign in life, having the best of all that pertains to life and godliness. He has given us the ability to be the best in all we do and be above only, yet there still exist Christians whose confessions do not align with the great destiny we have in Christ.

In Exodus 4, God tried to show to Moses that He had made him superior to Pharaoh and all his magicians but it took a while for Moses to accept his status and the authority conferred upon him by God. This is evident in his confessions below:

Exodus 4:10 “Moses replied, “I have never been a good speaker. I wasn’t one before you spoke to me, and I’m not one now. I am slow at speaking, and I can never think of what to say.” – CEV

God had ordained Moses a deliverer but he was quick to label himself as a weakling because his focus was on his natural limitations. Even when there are tasks, assignments, or situations before us that seem a lot bigger than our abilities can handle, it is wrong to place negative labels on ourselves. On the contrary, we can imitate Paul who in the face of odds, believed and confessed that he could do all things through the strength provided by Christ (Philippians 4:13).

Often times many people erroneously assume that having a self-deprecating tongue is an act of humility but it is not so! We are to make bold confessions of who and what God has made us, acknowledging that we have no sufficiency of our own selves but we are beneficiaries of the Grace of God which empowers us to do all things.

Begin today to make bold declarations and evade a Self-Deprecating Tongue.

God BLESS you.
